BAPTISM
Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation and the foundation of the Catholic life. Through Baptism, we are freed from sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the Church, the Body of Christ.
The Catholic Church has baptized both infants and adults since the earliest days of Christianity. Parents who present their children for Baptism make a commitment to raise them in the Catholic faith and to help them grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. Godparents share in this responsibility by serving as examples of faith and Christian living.
Parents are encouraged to have their children baptized within the first few weeks after birth whenever possible. Children under the age of seven are baptized through the Rite of Baptism for Children. Older children (7+) and adults who have not been baptized participate in a separate process of faith formation and sacramental preparation.
To celebrate Baptism, the Church asks that:
- At least one parent or legal guardian consent to the Baptism.
- There be a sincere intention to raise the child in the Catholic faith.
- Parents and godparents complete any required preparation.
- Both godparents must be a practicing Catholic who has received Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion.
Baptism is not denied simply because parents are not married in the Church, because only one parent is Catholic, or because a family is not formally registered in the parish. Each family's situation is approached with pastoral care and individual attention.
Baptism Preparation:
Parents and godparents are required to participate in Baptism preparation, which includes learning about the meaning of the sacrament, the Rite of Baptism, and the responsibilities of raising a child in the Catholic faith.
Families are encouraged to begin preparation during pregnancy whenever possible.
